1. Stop taking the abuse from
your co-workers or employees
- You don't have to accept this sort of
hassle on your job. Everyone has a right to work in a decent job environment
without discrimination.
2. Accept the fact that you're not the one
with the problem
- The thing you have to
remember is that you are not the one to have caused the problem
and your self-esteem does not have to be lowered because of
it.
3. Talk to a trusted coworker/friend about
what's happening to you
- You don't have to suffer alone and in
silence. Think of who might be the best person to talk with about what is
happening to you. Your friends at work can assist you in getting help with
organizations like the EEOC
to file discrimination charges. Other parts of your life will suffer if you
keep silent, so speak up now before the problem takes over.
4. Go for a team
effort
- Find other people that you work with
who have also been discriminated against to work with you on making a change
in the workplace. You can also talk to other friends that work in different
jobs who feel like they are also discriminated against in order to help organize
a national campaign against race discrimination.
5. Make people take you
seriously
- If you are going to alert someone to
the fact that you're being racially discriminated against at work, make sure
they understand that your problem is real and not a joke. You have to be prepared
to get across how it is affecting your well-being. This is also why you need
to talk to someone you trust.
6. Keep some evidence of what's
happening
- You should keep a diary of race discrimination
events that are happening to you. Write down details about what happened,
who was involved, the date, time, place, and list any witnesses. Use other
evidence if it is available. This might be useful to show others when you
are asking for help.
7. Plan what you would like to
happen
- Make a plan with yourself and your friends
who are helping you. For example, start a campaign against racism in your
workplace, join or start an organization against racist discrimination, or
file charges.
8. Make other parts of your
life even better
- Don't let racists ruin
every area of your life. If you are unhappy at work, then make
sure you make up for the bad times by enjoying yourself at home or
with your friends outside of work.
9. Keep safe and aware
- You can't spend your life looking over
your shoulder, but it pays to be aware of dangers. Stick with groups of friends
that you trust at work if you feel vulnerable.
10. Never give up!
- You might not be able to tackle racism
by yourself. Seek out support and accept help where you can. Find your allies.
