Family

Aside from waitressing 20 hours a week and going to school full time, Karen is also a single mother of two school-aged children. She has two sons - one is eight years old and the other is eleven.

Karen keeps pictures of her sons on her book at work and in her purse.

"My major joy in my life is my children . . . They put a smile on my face."

Karen hopes each of her sons will grow up to be the kind of man she wishes she had married the first time. She wants them to be good citizens, kind, loving, caring, that they be the best they can be, and that they be happy.

For the most part, Karen's managers are understanding of her being a single mother, especially since many people who work at the Olive Garden are single parents.

"Most of [the managers] are pretty considerate of the fact that we have families and things come up, but there's always the exception of managers who don't care whether your kids are sick."

We asked Karen: If given $10,000, what would you do with it?

"I would probably just pay off bills . . . not very exciting. It's been quite a rough road."
