IT WAS JUST THE BEGINNING . . .

"I think you just make spur of the moment decisions..."

At age 18 on a spur of the moment decision Laurie Ross decided to join the military. This decision seemed to make the most sense at that time. She took into consideration that her father had been a Green Beret and her brother, Michael, was looking into West Point. Also, her cousin had recently been killed in a car accident this helped to encourage her spontaneous decision. At that time, the military offered a full G.I. Bill and the idea of four years of free education after her service was very appealing....

"And maybe part of it was rebellion."

Laurie had grown up with an exceptionally close family. This was especially true for her and her sister, Patty. Being sisters they had grown up inseparable. She didn’t realize it would be so tough to be away from her family, especially Patty. After agreeing to the Oath (similar to the one below) her decision became a reality. Her mother was absolutely devastated. Her father, who had previously hid behind a tough, masculine wall, broke down and cried the day before she left. It was a man’s world that no woman, let alone his own daughter, should step into.

"Had he done that before the Oath, I might have reconsidered."
