Try to imagine a six week course that consists of chasing down bus drivers, begging electricians for interviews, learning to use a digital camera, staring in disbelief at a computer monitor, and seriously doubting it will ever all come together. Welcome to www.women. It was like this... |
As much as it pains me to say it, I actually enjoyed this term III course, "WWW.Women." While there were several obstacles to overcome, each a formidable challenge in its own way, I can confidently say that we came out on top. The main factor I dealt with was compromise. As one might guess, when working with two other people, things do NOT always go the way one would like... even if the group is composed of close friends. Regardless of our differences and various levels of motivation and drive, in the end, we all came through for each other. I'm even content with our creation. Sure, at times, I got frutsrated as all hell; however, I'm glad i saw it through to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing Mrs. Wood and found the topic of "Blue Collar Women" to be a rich one. As the opportunity to interview a woman busdriver is a rare one, I'm glad I took this class. With a more than capable professor, helpful (and loud) classmates, a good attendance policy and a great time of day to meet, I would deem this project and class a success. ....David Allan Williams P.S. I still HATE Macintosh computers!!! But at least i understand them now. |

Taking www.women has been one of the oddest experiences of my life. Through the six weeks of class I was taken to so many places. I spent hours a day in The Apple Orchard. It may sound like I spend my days surrounded by trees and apples but that is only somewhat true. I spent my days surrounded by Apple computers creating web-pages. This journey also brought me to places like Syracuse and wandering around 3rd Street in Elmira searching for a woman in construction. I never throught that I would spend my days of Term 3 traveling to Syracuse in, what we liked to call The Spaceship (you would probably call it a new VW Bug). I am glad that I did though because I learned so much. This class taught me not only about computers but also about team work. Without everyone in class keeping on task our web-site would never have gotten finished. Even with all the oddness of this class I am thrilled that I had the opportunity to take it. ....Steph :-) |
Change that background! Why? Because it's ugly. |

What can I say? A whole lot, but Iwon't. This class was rather amazing to me. I walked in it without a clue as to what I needed to do to pass it. Like many students my knowledge of a computer did not move beyond e-mailing friends and typing up papers. The first couple of days in class we met in a classroom setting. That was the end of the most peaceful moments I would have in this class. From that point on I would want to pull my hair out almost every time I went into the computer lab. There were so many things I needed to know and not enough time to know them in. First the home page: this happened to be the most trouble I would have because I wanted so many "things" on it, but did not have enough "K" to do it with. K, yes I would soon learn "k" made the difference in if I would have four pictures or seven. For personal home pages we were only allowed 200 k; which may seem like a lot but when it comes down to it, it really is nothing. Then I would go through the wonderful world of links and anchors each of which is simple but if you don't know what they are at first it seems like "greek". Then I would go through a process of being in a group that had wonderful ideas, but it may have not been what I wanted and many times standing on the outside was all I could do. Then there is the process of hooking everything together, but before "we" do this we must make sure as a group we have not gone over the thousand "k" we are allowed for our project. Then there is the process of almost "madness" and when you think you want to throw a computer, you are done. At this point you can sit back enjoy your work and realize the class was worth it, but the "headache" was not. So if "I" learned anything from this class it to breathe in deeply, release slowly and always count my "K's".......Tameka |
I have learned many new things from my class experience. When I decided to take this class I did not know exactly how it would be taught. I didn't realize all the work and effort that we had to put into making the web site a success. I enjoyed meeting and interviewing Renee Rosplock and feel that she is a great role model to not only women in the electrical field but also to men. Before taking this class I had no idea how to make a web page. I now know how to create a web page by adding links and pictures. I am glad I took this class because it was a great learning experience for the future. I would recommend taking this class to anyone who is interested in learning about remarkable women and making web sites. ....Melissa M. |

What have I learned from this Term III class my senior year? Well it wasn't as easy as I hoped but it was worth it. I got to design 3 web sites and not read any books or take any tests. I got to meet an amazing woman from Elmira and learned about firefighting and lesbian baiting. I got to work with a group of peers who I really respect and gained new admiration for. The skills both on computer and interpersonal are all invaluable. The class(and some of the people) really taught me a lot. Patience is key to surviving this class and my advice to people interested in it is keep an open-mind and bite your tongue. I feel that because of my efforts I have grown and matured yet again from one of your classes. Rewrites, changes and lots of time weren't exactly what I expected but I am glad that things worked out the way they did and things went so well. I have learned about myself, my patience, my friends and a woman who has truly opened my eyes to a life that I really couldn't imagine. Pat Lynch was a great interviewee and a fabulous person. I hope that others learn from her through the pages we created. I think that through it all(the hours and the complaining) as long as one person walks away more educated then I think my group acheived its goal and should be proud of the work we produced. Thanks for all your help Diane..... Melissa D.

The course as a whole was rather interesting. Certain parts to it were a nuisance though. Personally I was confused a great deal with the computer lingo and how to actually create the pages themselves though I do admit that it helped me understand computers more. Plus I caught on pretty quickly. I did have fun seeing everything put together and watch all the pages get built. As for my group, I had the most fun working with these two individuals and made a new friend out of it which always makes me happy. We worked well together and supported each other when we didn't think we would get anywhere whether it be with the pages or the actual interview. Keeping a positive and optimistic outlook kept us going. At times I became frustrated when things weren't going the way they should or the computer kept crashing on us 100 times but that's to be expected. To sum up I had a blast in this class despite all the hardships that came along and I learned a lot about blue collar workers that I wouldn't have if I hadn't taken the course such as most of the issues that were researched. It was a definite eye opener, and getting a grasp of all the computer skills will definitely be an asset. Thanks for the memories! ....Lana
Just
get in the car, drive around to garages and ask around until you find
a female mechanic. How hard is that?

I really enjoyed this class because of the hands on aspect of it. I learn more from actually doing things and being kept busy than from reading and taking notes. I think that the off campus field work was really fun because it was a new experience. It was definitely a lot better than sitting in class and being lectured. ....Katie |
I really enjoyed this class because I feel that learning how to create a website is so important in today's world. I hope that this will help make me more marketable in my future. Actually, it has already because thanks to Maureen's project coupled with this class project I have found myself a job working for the government (yippie, skippie!) creating and teaching politicians about their computers. I find it so pathetic that none of them know how to use their computers, so I will change that, hopefully (not that this will be a good thing necessarily...but...) Anyhow, this class was a great end to my career at Elmira. I had a lot of fun (mostly because we did our work throughout the term not on the last day) I really didn't believe that no one would be ready on Fri., but I guess you know how it goes! Well, I want to end this saying thank you for being a great professor and challenging me. I thoroughly enjoyed my independent study with you last term, and this is why I decided to spend my last term learning about webpage designs in your class. Thank you, and hope to see you at graduation. :).... Lauren |

For me this class has been throughly enjoyable. I have gained something I thought I would never have, building my own sites. When I first started I hardly knew anything about the internet and it scared me. Now it has become enlightening. Every time I go on the internet it is a new experience. You never know what to really expect. I loved creating my own site because it allowed me to be extremely creative. I am walking away from this class with a skill that I can use in the future. I want to thank my group, Mike, and Diane Maluso. It was a pleasure working with you all!.... Francesca
I learned
so much in this class. I got the chance to meet so many new people that
I would have never met, and I can now call these people friends. I got
to work with a great teacher in a more relaxed setting, and had fun getting
picked on. Learning new software like Claris Works was a highlight in
the class..It was so much fun making my own home page. I can honestly
say that this is the one class that I constantly told home about..My parents
were constantly asking how the page was going, and were excited to see
the final result. Overall, I am sad that this class is over...It is a
good thing that I am going home for the summer, because I do not think
that I could have more classes. I would be bored to death!!! Thanks Dr.
Maluso for making this so much fun for me!! Hopefully you will see me
in lots more classes! ...Ashley

Www.women was unlike any class I have ever taken before. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I was willing to take a chance. We were all told in the beginning that our goal was to make a web page about women workers, and my group members looked at me as if to say "yeah, right!" None of us knew anything about computers other than how to type papers and check our e-mail. The class consisted of a lot of frustration and anxiety, but in the end, our products were amazing! The hard work paid off, and we ended up learning more in the past six weeks than we ever imagined...but most of all, we had a great time!...Jenny
Being in this class, www.women, gave me insight into what frustration is and means. For years, I thought I knew what frustration was, but now I truly know. This class was a crash course in technological snaffus and how to successfully deal with them. Most important, about this course, was the job skills it has given me in regard to web page construction. I was stressed out a lot during these long weeks also because of "artistic differences." These differences came in all aspects of the course. Whether it be making suggestions to other groups or defending my own color schemes, there were always interesting arguments going on around the room. I learned that what I said and what I thought was not always priority one, as it is in my head. One would have to ferociously defend my opinions. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. This was a good lesson to learn and it means that I will leave this class with a certain humility. Being in this class also meant that Dr. Diane Maluso and Pat Lynch were the most important people in my life. The project had meaning because of Pat and had a voice because of Diane. I would love to thank them both and wish their futures bright. ...Don |
