In this
class we will engage in a scholarly exploration of women and
blue collar trade professions. After conducting interviews
of local female electricians, plumbers, mechanics, and/or
carpenters and researching topics relating to women and blue
collar fields, we will work in teams to explore and share
our findings via interviews, research, discussion, and the
creation of a World Wide Web site on the Internet.
Objectives
for the Course
To learn
about women and blue collar work, especially about individual
women in central New York. To explore related issues such
asspecial opportunities and challenges for women in these
fields, experiences of women in trade unions, etc.
To learn
how to present our findings to a wider audience using software
and the Internet
To
learn how to use the tools of oral history and folklore research
such as tape-recorded interviews, photographic and video documentation,
and transcription.
Grading
Grading
will be determined on a "portfolio" basis. As projects
are drafted, work in progress will be shared and constructively
critiqued by students and the instructor. The quality of your
writing is extremely important in this class. Superficial
treatments of subject matter will result in less than excellent
grades. The projects will be continually revised, based on
the critique sessions, until the final class meeting.
Grades will be based on the overall quality of the final projects,
member home pages, and level of participation in the class
and team meetings. It is absolutely necessary for you to be
a reliable and energetic member of your group. If you do not
keep your commitments, do not show up for class or group meetings,
do not submit your contributions in a timely manner, you will
not receive a favorable grade in this course.
