Arriving at Elmira College in 2005-2006 as a Visiting Instructor, I was hired as an Associate Professor of Political Science for 2006-2007. After 13 years at a large research institution, the small classes and personal atmosphere are very welcome. Being the only specialist in American politics on the faculty, I have much more freedom to teach courses of interest to me and the students.
Two of my favorite courses are ones I developed since arriving at Elmira - Political Thought and my Term III course on Politics and Film. Given that at a larger institution I would never have been able to develop these courses is one of the many attractions for faculty like me who have wide-ranging interests and great curiosity. I still, however, love teaching courses on the institutions of American politics - Congress, the Presidency, Law and the Courts, and Political Parties.
My off-campus passion for political involvement allows me to bring the course material to life for the students with examples from real life to supplement the written word in the texts and assigned readings. It also allows me the opportunity to introduce students to political figures and elected officials at all levels of government. The photo to the right shows two of my students - Michelle Lockwood (middle) & Jeremy Gray (right) - with US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (if I recall correctly I took this photo with Michelle's camera) .
The banner that stretches across the top of all the pages here depicts my political and professional life. In the first photo on the left I'm with then Senator Hillary Clinton at a lunch in Niagara Falls. In the second one I just received an award for Outstanding Professor in the Political Science Department at the University at Buffalo. Next is a photo of me in front of a class here at Elmira College. The fourth photo is of me with Howard Dean in Lake Placid, NY in 2003 as he was gearing up his presidential run. Next to that is me with former Senator (and NY Knicks star) Bill Bradley after his run for the 2000 Democratic presidential nomination. The last photo on the right is of me with actor Richard Schiff at the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004 -- Schiff played Toby Ziegler on The West Wing (perhaps my favorite TV show of all time).
