I
have a deep and abiding love for the discipline of history. The study of
the past has nourished as well as educated me. It has made me an informed
citizen by illuminating the major issues shaping world civilizations. It
has also enabled me to understand the ways in which my society builds on
earlier cultures but also differs from them. When I first began reading
history as an adolescent in Brooklyn, it was a revelation, a discovery,
of new worlds. The wonder and excitement of that moment has never left me.
I strive in both my teaching and scholarship to convey that wonder to my
students.
