~ Russian Environmentalism ~
In a world not too different from that of your own live your neighbors. Not the person that you go to for that missing ingredient you forgot your recipe called for, dwelling next door, but everyone far and wide who share the same space on a wonderful planet known as Earth. We tend to go about our daily lives forgetting to think about the thousands of faceless others. Sure we help those starving children we see on television, and within our local communities, but I am not talking about conserving energy by turning off that extra light, taking shorter showers, or recycling that plastic bottle sitting on your counter. It is the invisible, forgotten neighbor who believes their concerns is second to those immediate situations eclipsing others.
Societies stretching across a diverse landmass, forming the nation of Russia, find themselves in the vast shadow of their past, struggling for needed changes to ensure future health. The country is not as backwards as one reads about in their high school textbook. They have made incredible advances beyond other flourishing countries, and unlike successful nations, Russia also has its faults. The citizens live in an environment grappling with the trash of the past and that accumulating in the present.
Communities are unaware of the hazards chemical landfills have on their life. With the abilities to travel a long distance, toxins are seeped into the ground water, contaminate local soil used for planting food, and consumed by animals and humans. The battle one is waging to ensure the population is aware of the effects of the chemical landfills. Government laws are too weak to ensure that companies of the future properly dispose of waste. The hazardous materials can cause birth defects, neurological issues, behavioral disorders, reproductive, endocrine, and hormonal disruption, among other side effects of less severity.
A vast variety of pollutants exist in the world. Russia is not any different in the issues they experience than other nations at one point or another. Radioactive, chemical, toxic waste, and pesticides, polluted waterways, and air from industry emissions and coal, are just some of a few major issues the nation faces heading into the future.
