Racial discrimination is still a large problem in the workforce of today's time. Luckily, Beverly has had only one experience in which she felt racially discriminated against. Below is Beverly's story about her experience with racial discrimination.

Beverly's event dealing with racial discrimination happened at her current job when she first started working at it. A co-worker of Beverly's, an African American woman, claimed that her money was stolen from her. The woman stated that she had put her money in her apron and accused Beverly of taking her apron. Everyone else that Beverly worked with also immediately accused her of taking the money from the apron and started to point fingers at her. No one verbally accused Beverly of stealing the money but they all assumed that she had. In actuality, the woman had put her money in a drawer behind the counter but had forgot that she had put it there.

After the woman found her money behind the counter, no one apologized to Beverly for accusing her of stealing the money. Beverly feels that her fellow co-workers accused her because she is an African-American. She was the only other African-American working besides the woman that claimed to have gotten her money stolen and because of this, it made her feel that that was the reason why she was blamed.

Beverly does not feel that she has been discriminated against in any other way. She gave us some of her thoughts about race discrimination, which were:

"I try not to get involved in that, everybody's the same to me. If I'm standing there and they're talking about it, I walk away because I don't instill that in my kids and I'm not going to tolerate it on my job."

Wage, promotion and vacation-wise, Beverly does not feel that she has been racially discriminated against by Elmira College.
