The Basics of ARMY Training
|

The first obstacle to surmount in the Army is basic training. Cate was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina in August of 1980. It was an exciting time for the young woman who was anxious to get out of the area she called home for so long. Unable to recall any feelings of doubt or nervousness at the idea of entering the world of the military, Cate relates her experience entering the Army to any experience she could go through in typical daily life; just another adventure. |

When Cate arrived at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in August of 1980, she began extensive training in various fields of Army preparation. Perhaps one of the most essential aspects of a soldier's training is physical fitness. "The physical training program of the US Army is designed to develop strength, endurance, agility, and coordination - and to promote confidence, aggressiveness and team spirit." Additionally, the Army prepares its soldiers with training in first aid techniques, defense against nuclear, biological and chemical agents and rifle maintenance. Cate's determination to finish basic training was an attempt to fulfill personal motives to succeed. |

"I watched a lot of people walk away from really, really prominent and good careers because of the physical end of things. And then I've seen a lot of people who really wanted to excel and just physically couldn't." |

Despite the various setbacks Cate was confronted with during basic training such as harsh drill sergeants and seemingly impossible physical and mental challenges, Cate never regretted her decision to enter the Army. She recalls feeling shock during her first encounter with the demanding drill sergeants, but quickly developed an understanding that their goal is to break you down, so they can then build you up. Consequently, Cate's ability to understand the intentions of the drill sergeants allowed her to gain the most out of her military experience. |

"A lot of it has to do with the fact that they have to break all of the preconceived notions that you found you have in your own head that a lot of people don't even realize they have. And by breaking those away, and actually putting you in a situation where your defenses are down, they can then begin to build you into a stronger person...The whole experience was a personal triumph.
