Laurie's Story
The tasks Laurie performed for the military police were the same as a police officer would have been assigned.
She was appointed to the 21 st military police company. One week she would have road duty during the day, one week she would
have road duty from 3p.m.- 11 p.m., then 11 p.m. - 7 a.m., and finally the fourth week she would usually get an EDRD and have
an hour to report to the company. She would then go out and play "war". One thing that she never understood was the difference
of ammunition between the men and women.
"The men carried 45s without
ammo while the women carried 38s and were given ammo."
There was one incident in particular that she was greatly challenged as an officer. One night she was working alone and was called
to the Enlisted Club, a club for enlisted men but not officers. Some drunk guy had a loaded shotgun and was calling out threats.
She had to hold her gun, pointed at his head. As she reflected back she was
fearless...
"I had no doubt that I could pull
the trigger."
During her last year in the service she went up to battalion level and became the colonels secretary. This was her favorite duty during her entire service.
The little time that she spent on the field was much easier compared to what it had been. She had a great deal of respect for this man and
thought that he was a wonderful person.
"Im happy because I took the
time and gave three years to my country."
The service that she provided for her country left her with a great deal of pride and confidence.
She believes that everyone should serve because we all want our freedom.
Given the chance, Laurie would do it all over again.
"I have no regrets . . . "
