Clay Page

One of Laura's most unique qualities is the fact that she once took clay from her own backyard to experiment with her creativity.

"Our backyard sloped off and there was a vein of clay that ran on the slope. I guess from poking around, I found it and pulled it out. The clay was pretty clean already, but I could screen it and get some of the twigs out. I never had a place to fire it, so I would make little things and let them dry. They wouldn't last."

Once Laura started taking more classes she had access to clay, so she no longer experimented with the clay from her backyard.

Types of clay she now uses:

- Stoneware: high fired vitreous clay containing silica, sand, and flint

- Earthenware: baked clay fired to a temp. of below 2000 degrees Fahrenheit

- Terra cotta: non-vitreous, red earthenware used for pottery

- Porcelain: high fired, hard, white, nonporous, translucent variety of ceramic ware
