Over the past few decades solar energy has made great strides in reducing costs and gaining acceptance as a cost-effective alternative to fossil fuel electricity generation. Even though fossil fuels have been around for a very long time, they are clearly limited and as supplies continue to dwindle its cost increases. And the environmental risk increases as more extreme measures to find oil and gas are undertaken. Take the BP Gulf oil spill as an example. Never before have oil companies gone so deep (1 mile down) to extract oil – this is both expensive and environmentally risky. Clearly, the world needs to move to more sustainable and less costly fuels to continue meeting the energy needs of growing economies.
