THE GLOBAL MARKETPLACE
1980-2000
Expanding upon post WWII economic changes even more elements
of women's "traditional" work at home are transformed moving into
the marketplace as services for sale. In 1990, 63% of Hawai`i's women worked
for wages, with nearly 40% of them, numbering 160,000, working in sales,
office, and service jobs. While women continue to be employed in various
forms of "domestic service" work, at the same time new occupations
are slowly opening up for women.
The transformation of Lana`i pine workers into resort service
workers reflects national economic trends. In the next 10 years, half of
all newly created jobs in the U.S. are expected to be in the "service
sector."
