How Often Is There
An Article About A Woman?
As mentioned, Sports Illustrated is mainly a men’s magazine. From April 2005 to April 2006, in 54 issues there were only 67 articles out of 1151 concerning women and their sports. That is barely five percent.
• Two of these articles dedicated to players wives in bathing suits and two about women coaches.
• In twelve of these issues there was not one article about women.*
• Women’s golf and the LPGA had the most articles with fifteen. Sports such as boxing, volleyball, and soccer only had one tiny article.
• Women’s college and pro basketball came in second with ten articles.
• Because 2006 was a Winter Olympic year there were six articles concerning hockey, skiing, snowboarding, as well as speed skating. Figure skating had seven articles alone.
• During the months of May until August there was four articles containning information about women’s tennis, and professional swimming.
• Women‘s gymnastics and softball each had two articles in these summer months.
• There were three articles that involved Danica Patrick, the woman racer from last year.
• In this year there were only two women on the cover, (not including the swimsuit edition) Danica Patrick and Jennie Finch.
*All of these issues did have at least three unknown women athletes in the small section of Faces in the Crowd.
