Women in Spring
During my junior year, Spring Term, I toke a women's studies course by the name of WWW.Women. WWW.Women taught by Diane Maluso solely focused on an enticing issue, 'Women in Sports'. I am glad to say that WWW.Women: Woman in Sport has definitely mold my insight with such an issue as more grounded concrete and refined. One lesson that I have learnt in this course, pertaining to athletes is that society typically views athletes not as individual, but rather walking billboards simply because athletes embody the identity and appearance of society. Therefore, these walking billboards are recognized and constantly praised. Needless to say, when athletes engage themselves in unfortunate decisions, which creates humility and shame on society, these once praised walking billboards are shun and kept in the dark corners of society.
WWW.Women is by far, among the few down-to-earth, realistic and exciting classes that I have ever taken throughout my college career at Elmira College. This magnificent class was solely devoted to women and their journey throughout sports. Our main objective throughout the coursed entailed students designing websites about female athletes, issues that taunts sports and personal websites. Hence, this website is on offspring of WWW. Women. I am glad to say, that I have learnt a great deal of useful knowledge and hands on experience from this course, which includes:
- A background on web designing.
- A larger insight on issues that mask sports such as performance enhancers.
- Respect and admiration towards the many female athletes whom have paved the walk way for others.
- The understanding and acceptance that any and every woman is capable of engaging in a "male sport" as many in society view such sports as.
One unexpected event that toke hold of this vibrant class was Geocaching. Who would have thought that a class centered on web designing would have experience the rush and thrill of an outdoor activity. I was deeply surprised and impressed. Before taking the class, I assumed that the course would have been strictly devoted to web designing, I would have never guessed a day of Geocaching, a great deal of fun and pleasure would have been apart of my grade. To explain the concept of Geocaching as simple as possible, Geocaching is basically a hiking treasure haunt. In order to find the treasure, one uses not a map, but a GPS system. Yes, the idea of using a GPS on a treasure haunt sounds pointless. However, GPS are not 100% accurate thus, your GPS may show you where X marks the spot on it’s monitor, but in reality, you are likely to be a few feet away from the hidden treasure. Being new to the whole idea of Geocaching, I really did not know what to expect. However, any student will admit that a term III class with Dr. Diane Maluso is bound to be filled with outdoor activities.
Our first outdoor field trip, Geocaching took place at the beautiful and open park of Tanglewood Nature Center. One must admit, the open landscape and the nature found within the park is a mere reflection of creation’s masterpieces. Each group was given a GPS system, clues, and treasure to swap if the cache container was found. At first, I was quite skeptical of Geocaching since there were rattlesnake warning signs throughout the park. However, once I got into the mood of it and began walking on the trails, the thought of being bitten by a rattlesnake was the least of my worries. What made my Geocaching experience so intriguing was the fact that my group and I decided to make our very own trail on account that our GPS system was way off. This included walking of the instructed trail and making our own trail via slops, little cliffs and through the actually wood. For me personally, this was extremely nerve wrecking. What if I fell? Proud to say, out of the two groups, we found all of the cache box, which I may add was fun but a lot of work. One character that I enjoyed and appreciated most with my group was the fact that they always stopped so I could catch up. That is what you call true team work.
I was fortunate to take WWW.Women with Dr. Diane Maluso, spring term 2009. Being such a fun filled, successful and energetic class that it is, previous students recommended WWW.Women to me and I am glad I had listen to those previous students. To any students at Elmira College who are not sure on what class they would want to enroll into during the spring term, I would recommend you to take WWW.Women with Dr. Diane Maluso. You will not regret taking such a recommendation. To conclude, you will walk out of the doors of WWW.Women with web designing skills, a background on selected outdoor activities and most delicate, memories that will last you a lifetime. I know I did.

Words of wisdom
Women will change the nature of power, rather than power changing the nature of women.
A woman is like a teabag. You never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water.
I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is; I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.
