a little piece of me

This webpage was created as a part of the WWW.WOMEN class at Elmira College. The purpose of this course was to educate those of us who are incompetent in webpage design on how to use Dreamweaver but more importantly to address how women's sports and recreational activities affect our lives.

introductions

Welcome everyone to my webpage! This is just a little space where I get to talk about my past and present experiences in sports and recreational activities. As a part of my class I was assigned to participate in some recreational acitivites (yes this was a real class) which you will find in more detail in the links above.

who i am

My name is Lisa Binsley and I was born on November 27, 1984. I grew up in Cape Vincent, NY which is a small town located where the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario meet. This year I will be graduating from Elmira College with a BA in Psychology which I will be taking with me on my move to Buffalo, NY to work with an AmeriCorps program at the West Seneca Youth Bureau.

background in sports

I was very fortunate to be blessed with supportive parents who always encouraged me to do what I wanted with no regards to social standards of what a girl "should" do. Sam, my brother, was 8 years older than me and was always outside playing catch or shooting hoops with my dad. My parents always pushed me to play outside instead of sitting in front of the television; so I quickly learned to play sports with my dad and brother. I guess you could say I was a tiny bit of a tomboy when I was younger. When I was about 7 my brother joined a summer soccer league that was open to all students, I was quick to sign-up with him even though I was playing with kids twice my age.

At my school, Thousand Islands Central, modified sports start in 7th grade which is when I signed up for the soccer team. In a bold attempt to try something different I joined the volleyball team in 8th grade and quickly discovered that I sucked horribly at it but I made it through the season. Throughout middle school and high school I played on the soccer team; I loved playing soccer just for fun and the competition gave me such a rush. At the end of my sophomore year I dislocated my knee during a soccer drill and since then have not been able to play at a competitive level.

Although I do not compete or play any team sports anymore I try to remain active through rollerblading, jogging, and sometimes a bit of yoga. I still like to get outside and play catch with my friends but most of what I do now is for enjoyment and relaxation. So now that you know a little bit about who I am you can go check out the links to the activites I participated in for my class!
