Labels:

We found that in almost all of the stores we visited that the men's section was not labeled. The women's and children's on the other hand were often separated by signs. This gave the impression that the store was directed towards the men more and defining their area was not necessary. The men's clothing section was also the most visible as we entered the store, while the women's were either off to the side or in the back.

Shoes:

The shoes for the males were actually labeled, but more importantly they outnumber the females selection. The options for men looking for shoes almost doubles the possibilities that the women have. In one store there were 7 columns for the women shoes but for the men there were 13. Also, the men's shoes were spread out across the back of the store cleary visible from the entrance while the women's were in the corner and almost hidden from a shopper entering the store. Normally in shoe stores the female shoes outnumber the males but in our observations we found it to be the opposite of sporting goods stores.

Specialty Sections:

Hunting: This section we found to be located behind the men's clothing, which was the opposite side of the women's apparel. The hunting area is separated from the rest of the items of the store, if they had a section at all. There were no signs of anything directed towards women in this area of the store.

Exercise equipment/ weights: In all the stores we went to, there was a designated area just for these items. The display usually had all the weight lifting machines that showed men as an example of how to use them properly. The ones directed more towards the women were placed in the corner, behind all the other items, and not easily accessible because of the machines being in the way. The weights that were supposed to be for men were mixed in among the other lifting equipment. The weights designed for women were separated from this section of the store by an aisle, and faced the other direction which was hard to see.
