My Recreation Experience

Organized Sports (continued)

Basketball was another sport that I started playing when I was a kid. My third grade teacher loved basketball, so she taught my friends and I how to play at recess. For this, I am grateful, since it is now my favorite sport. I immediately loved the game and practiced just about every day at recess. I started playing on our school’s team that same year. I ended up making the girl’s All Star team for our district that season, although I’m not sure why. I’m pretty sure I scored about two points during the whole season.

The rest of my sports career was a little haphazard. Over my middle school and high school years, I played quite a few different sports. I played basketball all the way up through my senior year, but stopped playing soccer when I was in tenth grade. I also ran track for three years, tried lacrosse for a year, and even field hockey for a year. So far in college, I have played JV basketball for two years and JV soccer for one, as well as various intramural sports.

With my college years nearing their end, meaning fewer opportunities to be part of sports activities, I have to say I’m glad I have participated in so many different sports. I have enjoyed getting to learn the rules of each one and have had so much fun in the process. Looking back, I can see how sports provided me with a good opportunity to meet people. To this day, most of my good friends are the people I played sports with when I was a kid. I'm a shy person, so getting to know people has never been an easy thing for me. Sports provided me with an oppotrunity to get to know many of the kids I went to school with, as well as people from other local schools. If I hadn't played, chances are I never would have even met many of these people. Most of my favorite memories involve sports in one way or another and I am glad to have had the opportunity to experience these moments.
