Cheerleading
I started cheerleading when I was an eight grader at Conte Middle School. This was the first year the middle school decided to have a cheerleading program and my best friend and I decided to join. We became cheerleaders and were taught the basic skills that helped us both fall in love with the sport. When we arrived at high school we both decided to try out for the squad and luckily we were picked. So I started out my freshman year as one of the only two freshman cheerleaders, which was nice. My freshman year I learned more of the skills of cheerleading from stunts to stiffness, dances and basket tosses. Having a group of friends in the same interest, as myself was wonderful, plus having my best friend with me made things so much easier. My sophomore year of high school was my favorite because not only did we have the first boy on the squad, but we also decided to go to a competition. We prepared long and hard for the competition hiring a professional to make our whole routine, and it all paid off in the end because we earned second place in our division. I continued cheerleading through out my high school years but when I came to Elmira College is when I really started to become dedicated to the sport. First at Elmira when I became a cheerleader I was on the junior varsity squad and was chosen to be one of the captains. Toward the end of the season I was asked to move up and become an alternate for the varsity squad when they go to Nationals. Luck be it that I was moved up again to compete on the nationals floor in Daytona Florida. So as a freshman I was able to compete in front of hundreds with a squad I absolutely love. I will once again be cheering with Elmira College next year and am currently involved in the summer workout program since our season does not begin until fall.
