I was born
and raised in Connecticut. As a kid I loved to be active and sports were
the way to do that. Sports have had a major role in my life for as long
as I can remember. I have played soccer, basketball, T-ball, volleyball,
and
ice
hockey.
Ice hockey is still a big part of my life.
It all started my sophomore year in high school a friend asked me to try
ice hockey with her. I tried it and could not stop playing, I was hooked.
First,
I
was a
defenseman for our thirds team but then our goalie got hurt. Our coach
asked me to try to play goalie. He asked me because he thought I was a
good skater and would do well.
I found goaltending was even more fun than being a defenseman. It was
awesome I got new equipment and focused on improving my skills. By my senior
year I was the starting goalie for varsity while also playing junior varsity.
I played on both teams because we had only one other goalie besides me
and she had to play for our thirds team. Therefore we split the playing
time for junior varsity.
It was tough and people’s jaws would drop when I said I was an ice
hockey goalie. Perhaps because people see ice hockey as a men’s sport.
I never let that bother me because I love playing so much. Once I got to
college I still was able to play ice hockey for the junior varsity team
at Elmira
College.
Next
season
will
be my last playing for the soaring eagles, but I hope to keep playing ice
hockey until I can’t skate anymore!
One of my best memories from playing ice hockey was while I was still in
high school. Our team had entered into a Polar Bear Tournament. We were
tied for first place of our division with another team from Stamford. The
first seated team got to move into the next round. We had to play them
to decide who the top seat would be. We were tied all through the game
at 1 to 1. Finally we played sudden death overtime and no one scored.
Therefore we went in to shootout, which is one player vs. the goalie. Both
teams pick five people to shoot against the opposing team's goalie for
each round. After two rounds of shootout we were still tied. In the next
round
we were
down
2 to 1 and it was their last player to shoot on me in this round. I made
an awesome glove save to keep my team alive. It was the most thrilling
moment I have ever experienced. I guess I should tell you what happen after
that. Our last player went and her shot missed the net so we lost. But
it is a game I will never forget.
