~*~THE BIRTH OF A DOLL~*~
On March 10th 1987 in the isle of Nassau Bahamas; a brilliant ray of
joy beamed into the lives of Mr. Anthony and Anna Heastie. This pleasant
burst of joy was due to the birth of their only daughter whom they named
Ajene Chrysanthia Thelma. Ajene (meaning “Truth”) was the second
child of the couple as they had a son named Anthony Christopher only four
years before her birth. No sooner than she was born, was she named the
family’s doll; as she fit perfectly the description of the beautiful
baby described in Stevie Wonders song “Isn’t she lovely” (place
link to “Isn’t she lovely”. Today, the doll baby name
still lingers, as her family and friends all refer to her as The Original
Black Barbie.
Ambitious, Friendly, Beautiful, Loving, Motivated, Strong willed and Spiritual
describes her best and that is what makes Ajene the person she is. Ladies,
Gentlemen Boys and Girls, as you read on, embrace yourself in learning about “The
Life of a Doll;” for I am Ajene Chrysanthia.
~*~EDUCATION~*~
At the age of two, my parents enrolled me at Grace Sunshine Academy in
Palmetto Village Nassau Bahamas. I studied there for three years until
I graduated and moved on to Kingsway Academy Elementary School from reception
through sixth grade. Who would have known that it would be here that I
would have met friends that treat me like sisters and brothers; and who
would sacrificially share anything with me just to preserve my happiness.
Due to their fine personalities, the professor’s effective style of teaching,
and the great education provided at Kingsway; my parents and I decided that
I would be best if remained at this school to complete my junior and senior
high education. In high school, I proved to the professors and administration
that I was a good student and a good leader.
Every year, I would be listed on the Honor Roll and selected for various leadership
positions. From Student council leader and Head female Junior Monitor in junior
high school; I rose to the position of the school’s Deputy Head Girl,
Key Club President, Junior Achievement Vice President, and a graduation committee
secretary I strived toward capitalizing on my leadership capabilities. I am
truly grateful for these experiences. For although it was not easy for me to
balance my educational life, leadership life and social life; I was able to
do it anyway-as God was the source of my strength through the rough and peaceful
times.
Presently, I am a freshman student at Elmira College majoring in Biology-Chemistry.
My freshman year here has been a truly interesting one. Never before would
I have imagined myself going to school in northern New York-so far away from
the people, the culture the climate, and atmosphere of the Bahamas. But, I
always knew that I wanted to be a well rounded person who is highly diverse
and able to live, and survive effectively in any condition that I must be in.
Consequently, I believe that Elmira College is the best place for me. As I
advance my education and pursue my career, I will forever dare to be different,
dare to be the best, and dare to be excellent!
~*~JOBS AND FUTURE PLANS~*~
I enjoy helping others, shopping, working in the beauty salon, traveling,
being with friends, reading and public speaking. Hence, I plan to chose
a career that provides the all inclusive. When at home in the Bahamas,
I work as a hair stylist at Afrotique Hair and Nail Studio where I practice
the art of serving others and helping them to exhibit their inner beauty
by enhancing their outer beauty and appearance – as looking good
always provide that extra boost of confidence.
Once I have completed my undergraduate degree at Elmira College, I aspire to
attend graduate school and obtain my Doctor’s degree in Medicine, Specialize
in Surgery, and then sub-specialize in cosmetic surgery. Beauty is my passion
and my mother ensured that I kept this passion alive by allowing me to enroll
in summer classes at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute at age
sixteen where I received a certificate of Excellence and Participation in Cosmetology.
Therefore, I want to be that one who is able to put a smile on the face of
a who has been a victim of a fire incident or a horrific car accident. I want
to be that sense of hope- helping them to understand that they can live that
normal life they had previous to the accident. I want to help them reignite
that inner spark of beauty into becoming a glowing ray of sunshine on the outside
before they give up hope. For beauty IS my passion; a passion to serve others
and help them acquire the beauty that they believe is absent.
