~*~WHERE I AM FROM~*~

I was born and raised on the island of New Providence in The Commonwealth of the Bahamas. My country is unlike any other as it has only had its freedom, its independent name, its government structure, and global economic status since 1973; as this is when it was declared an Independent Nation. This country is one that exists as an archipelago of Islands in the North Atlantic Ocean just southeast of Florida, and sits northeast of Cuba. This Nation, which remained a British Colony for one hundred and ninety years, demanded their independence, and still manages to have good relations with them. In only thirty-two short years, this country has worked to prove to the world that they have what it takes to survive as a “new” country of the 20th and 21st Century.
With your minds wide open, and your eyes tightly shut, take a deep breath in, because this journey has only just begun. Now, gradually open your eyes and let us explore through this poem The goodies that The Commonwealth of The Bahamas has to offer.

~*~BEAUTIFUL BAHAMA-LAND~*~

Islands of splendor, Their Great secret not yet told;
But the time has come for me to unravel what it beholds.
I’m speaking of a place, where the sky is always blue;
And where shining, shimmering sunshine will always smile on you.

So If its sun, sea and sand you seek,
The Bahamas is the place to be.
Islands of majestic royalty, is how they’re best known;
No King or Queen could ever, surpass its beauty throne.
Seven hundred islands, is what it’s made up of;
Ornaments of the sea, Treasures from above!

Some say that they’re stepping stones, paving the ocean blue;
The pathway to heaven, a paradise so true.
With culture so deep, everlasting and unique;
The Bahamas will grant you with more than you can ask, believe, or think.

Lets take a trip to the place ,where the beach is covered with pink sand;
And emerald green water, flow peacefully toward land.
Nowhere in this universe can you ever find pink sand,
Except if you should visit MY BEAUTIFUL BAHAMA-LAND.

Friendly are it’s people,
So helpful nice and fine;
They’re ambassador’s of nature’s best,
Truly one of a kind.

Come and watch the cultural fest, JUNKANOO is what it’s called;
Bet if you experience it once, you will not be appalled.
There is music, costumes, dance, and more;
Read on and see what it has in store.
Cowbells shaking, music making,
Every body shaking, the whole crowd’s gyrating!
This can be experienced down on Bay Street,
The music is sure to make you jump on your feet,
To dance and shake to its contagious beat!

Pink feathers, black beak’
Long neck, skinny feet.
And just in case you still don’t know,
Their national bird is the flamingo.
The boisterous blue marlin,
Is their national fish;
With its long skinny mouth,
How can it be missed?
Oh I cannot forget that wide shady tree,
With light, waving, purple flowers that blooms so heavenly.
Lignum Vitae is its name,
Being the national tree has given it fame.
There’s another national symbol, that you may need to know;
And its an object that sways up high whenever the wind blows.

The Bahamian flag is what I speak of,
Ever color in this flag describes this land I love.
Gold, black, and aquamarine,
Depicts this original Bahamian theme.
Every color describing, what being Bahamian means.

Black is for the people,
United bold and strong;
Through unison and common- wealth,
This country moves along.
Gold represents a natural resource,
A true Bahamian prize;
The ever-blazing shining sun,
Gleaming from the sky.
The clear waters of Bahama- land,
Is why there’s aquamarine;
A color that consists of blends
Of aqua, teal and green.
If you still don’t understand, the meaning of the flag;
Here ’s another great approach, although I don’t mean to over-brag.

Gold is for the sun that glitters and glows,
On the crystal clear waters for which aquamarine codes.
Black is for the people, strong in unity;
Stability and Strength ? The Bahamian pedigree!

Surrounded by waters,
Sun sand and sea;
Providing the world,
With unlimited tranquility.
This fine place filled with glee,
Is called a home, a home for me.
