Deb's Coaching Philosophy!

Deb loves coaching and even has her own philosophy. “The Coach Deb philosophy! Most importantly the players should enjoy their time on the team. I don't want it to be something someone feels they have to do. Also, I want them to know that they matter to me both on and off the field which is why I had mentioned at one point that I make sure I try to remember all of their birthdays or send them postcards when I travel. I just try to be as great a coach as some of the coaches that I have had in my life.”

A few other words of advice from Deb on coaching: “When you are dealing with girls you should really have girls working with them. There are not that many guys who are accepting of girls, who can make it fun for them.”

She also uses various techniques to teach all ages about the fundamentals of baseball. For example, when trying to get the T-Ball kids to keep their back foot planted so as to not “screw themselves in the ground,” Deb tells the children that “it’s like squishing a bug; you can move it a little but keep it planted.”

This philosophy also extends to her instruction at the camps at which she coached. When asked if she could run her own camp how she would do it Deb explains, “Really I want to win the lottery and just build my own venue. That is my ultimate fantasy. I just need one big area, a dome would be nice… Players to get would obviously be who the kids like now. You’d have to get Manny, you’d have to get Ortiz… The most important things is that it would have to be of not cost to the people attending because that’s where you lose some people."
